This two-session program offers a behind-the-scenes look at how the Bureau of Forestry plans, carries out, and evaluates prescribed burns specifically for oak regeneration.

Session One: Planning for Fire
Before the burn takes place, participants will explore an oak stand alongside Bureau of Forestry staff to learn why fire is used as a management tool. We’ll discuss how prescribed burns are planned, what conditions must be met, and how fire reduces competing vegetation while preparing the forest floor for oak seedlings. Participants will examine fuel loads, understory plants, and signs that indicate a forest is ready for fire.

Session Two: Fire’s Impact on the Forest
After the prescribed burn, we’ll return to the same area to observe how the forest responded. Participants will compare pre- and post-burn conditions, focusing on changes to leaf litter, sunlight on the forest floor, and early signs of oak regeneration. We’ll also discuss how the Bureau of Forestry monitors burn results and uses fire as part of a long-term strategy to promote resilient, diverse oak forests.

Together, these sessions highlight how prescribed fire supports oak regeneration and give participants a deeper understanding of the Bureau of Forestry’s role in caring for Pennsylvania’s forests.

In partnership with Remake Learning Days, Northcentral Pennsylvania Conservancy, and Williamsport Bicycle Recycle, this ride highlights how biking can build confidence, curiosity, and connections to our local landscape. We’ll begin in Jersey Shore and travel north along the Pine Creek Rail Trail to Torbert, enjoying scenic views and a safe, accessible trail along the way.

Participants will also learn about bike safety, basic maintenance, and the role bicycles play in supporting active, lifelong learning.

This program is ideal for families with children who are comfortable riding on a flat, crushed-stone trail. Helmets are required for all participants, and riders should bring their own bike and helmet. Williamsport Bicycle Recycle will be on hand to support the event and celebrate the power of bikes as tools for learning, access, and community connection.
