Celebrate the beauty of spring at our Mother’s Day Wildflower Walk, Sketch & Paint, a peaceful, creative experience set in the woods of Lackawanna State Park!

Begin with a short, guided walk along Turkey Hill Trail, where you’ll discover vibrant wildflowers, learn about native plants and soak in the fresh air and natural beauty of the season. As we wander, you’ll be encouraged to slow down, observe and connect with nature.

After the walk, we’ll gather for a relaxing watercolor painting session inspired by the flowers and landscapes you’ve just experienced. Whether you’re a beginner or have some artistic experience, this workshop is designed to be welcoming, low-pressure and joyful. All materials provided through the Northeast Pennsylvania Environmental Literacy Network.

This experience is perfect for individuals, families, and especially mother-child pairs looking to spend meaningful time together. Create lasting memories and leave with a handmade piece of art that captures the day.

Spend the afternoon with park staff to learn the basics of fishing such as casting, knot tying, and rigging before trying your luck catching fish from the lake.

All basic equipment and bait will be provided or bring your own gear. Appropriate for ages 7 and up.

We are going to take on the entire length of Lackawanna Lake on this moderately-paced, 5-mile paddle. Kayaks, paddles, and PFD’s are available to borrow or bring your own. Be sure to bring drinking water, a snack, and sunscreen, as we will be on the water for approximately 3 hours. This program is designed for ages 12 and up who have kayaking experience.

- Basic kayaking experience required.
- Those under 16 years old must be accompanied by an adult.

Join PA Game Commission’s Environmental Education Specialist, Kelly Pollock, as she introduces participants to PA black bear biology, behavior, habitat, and seasonal activity, helping audiences understand why bears act the way they do. The program also focuses on the BearWise principles—simple, practical steps people can take to prevent conflicts, keep bears wild, and stay safe in bear country. Through engaging visuals and real-life examples, participants will learn how to secure food and attractants, recreate responsibly, and respond appropriately during a bear encounter.

Go into the field with Dr. Cara Krieg from the University of Scranton as she explains her research into House Wrens and their nesting behavior. See in-person how Dr. Krieg and her team study this songbird and what they are hoping to learn, as they dig deeper into the lives of birds to better understand the natural world!

This program is suitable for ages 12 and up.

Then kick off summer by joining us on a hike – a 9-mile hike that is! We’ll make our way through the Day Use Area, to the South Shore, up to the Flats, and back to complete a circuit around Lackawanna Lake.

Our path will be a long one, taking us along trails with inclines, tripping hazards, muddy sections and other risks associated with the natural areas. Dress for the weather, wear appropriate footwear, and bring something to eat and drink.

This is not a race or competition, but we will hike as a group at a moderate pace with limited breaks. This hike is open to all interested but participants are expected to self-evaluate their abilities with consideration given to fitness level, experience, terrain, distance, and weather. Minors under 16 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.

This hands-on workshop will introduce you to black bear biology, research trapping efforts, & management practices, as well as resources though Project WILD for your classroom to meet PA STEELS standards. An attempt to trap a live bear will be made to show you how and why bears are trapped and assessed by the Game Commission, while giving you an up-close look at the animal.

This workshop is open to classroom teachers and non-formal educators such as pre-service teachers, homeschool parents, naturalists, and scout leaders.

Project WILD's K-12 Curriculum & Activity Guide will be provided to all participants. Six (6) Act 48 hours are available to educators holding Pennsylvania public school certifications.
