Wood Duck Volunteer Day

Wood Duck Volunteer Day – Saturday, August 29, 2020

9:00 AM – 12:00 PM – Meet at 528 Bridge Boat Launch Area (528 Prospect Exit of 422)

There are over 100 wood duck nesting boxes located on the land and in the water throughout Moraine State Park.  We will be cleaning them out by motor boat, kayak and on foot.  With this many nesting boxes to clean, this will take some much-needed help.  Have you ever wanted to volunteer and do something for wildlife, if so now is your chance.  Join Park Staff and Russ Cawthorne of Specialty Outdoors, who specializes in quality nesting boxes and goose hunting equipment to clean out Wood Duck Nesting Boxes.  A limited number of kayaks are available.  Ages 12 and up, under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.  Kayaks and gear will be provided.  Life jackets required to be worn.  Pre-registration required.  To register call the park office at 724 368-8811.    Social Distancing Guidelines will be followed.  Please bring a face mask or covering.

This was so fun and interesting! We started off in a pavilion learning all about wood duck nesting boxes and how to check them from the very knowledgeable Russ. Then we split off into teams of boaters and kayakers to scout out there locations. We had a great time on the water and got up close to many wood duck boxes as well as sighting turtles, an osprey, and a heron!
