Walk in Penn's Woods at Boyd Big Tree Preserve
1447-1489 Pennsylvania 443, Harrisburg, PA 17112, USA
Please join the Dauphin County Woodland Owners Association (DCWOA), Manada Conservancy, and DCNR Service Forester Andy Brought on a co-sponsored Walk in Penn’s Woods at the Boyd Big Tree Preserve Conservation Area near the west end of Fishing Creek Valley. This 1,000+ acre tract straddles Blue Mountain and is the habitat of some relatively large trees (arguably old growth), and is home to deep forest birds, including thrushes and warblers. Ten interconnected trails totaling about 12 miles provide the opportunity for a variety of hikes. This year, we anticipate dividing our group into two, each led by a naturalist or forester, one taking the first portion of an easy, relatively flat, wide woodland trail (East Loop Trail), and the second ascending part way up the mountain on a slightly more challenging trail (Lower Springs Trail). Although, there are some open meadows at the Fishing Creek Valley (SR Rt.443) entrance and along a power line cut, both of our hikes will be primarily confined to woodland. Neither trail qualifies as ‘handicapped accessible', but the first should be good even for those who are a little less secure in their footing. We look forward to seeing you in October. Pets must be leashed, kept under control & will be dismissed and asked to leave the organized walk with any disruption. Clean-up after pet is required. This walk also asks that attendees to register with the Manada Conservancy at (717) 566-4122 or office@manada.org.
