The History Surrounding the Sawmill Trail
2950 Pohopoco Dr., Lehighton, PA 18235-8905
Join park naturalist Rob Bergstresser for a 2.0-mile guided nature hike along the beautiful Sawmill Trail, formerly a stagecoach road, leading past the remnants of an 18th Century gristmill and slate quarry. This unique trail is full of fascinating natural and 18th century pioneer history. We’ll take a close look at the captivating history behind this beautiful area of the park, once part of the former village of Big Creek Valley. All ages and experience levels are invited. Participants should bring water, a snack, and bug spray if needed. Please wear sturdy walking/hiking shoes.
We will be meeting at the Sawmill Trailhead off of Old Mill Road.
Directions from Beltzville State Park:
Turn left out of the park’s main entrance. Proceed past the Army Corps of Engineers building & go approximately 1 mile. Look for a Big Creek Grange sign on the left. Turn LEFT onto Grange Road. At the bottom of the hill, turn LEFT onto Old Mill Road. You will pass 3 houses on the left. After the last house, turn LEFT into the Sawmill Trail parking lot. PLEASE NOTE - The entrance to the Sawmill Trail parking lot is unmarked. If you proceed over the small bridge, you went TOO FAR!
Registration is REQUIRED, as group size is limited. Please register each individual attending, separately.
