Free Event

Planting the seeds of conservation during the Great Depression

Retired Game Warden Bill Williams will examine the daily life of members of Civilian Conservation Corps Camp Morton that was located along Fishing Creek near Elk Grove.

The “CCC” was a federal program created in 1933 to address massive unemployment and revitalize the nation’s ravaged natural resources.

Young men enrolled in the corps planted trees, built roads, fought forest fires, and improved wildlife habitat. Camp Morton was administered by officers from the Department of the Army, and local men served as supervisors on work projects.

Over three million young men participated in the CCC program nationwide and many went on to serve in the armed forces during World War II.

Meet at the Visitor Center.
