Stone Mountain Hawk Watch Perseid Meteor Shower and Night Hike
Step away from the glow of screens and city lights and into the ancient darkness of Rothrock State Forest for an evening that connects science, culture, and the cosmos. As the Perseid meteor shower peaks overhead — one of the most spectacular and reliable celestial events of the year — students will gather at Hawk's View to observe streaks of light produced by debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle burning up in Earth's atmosphere at speeds exceeding 130,000 miles per hour.
But this night is about more than meteor counts. Our educational staff will guide students through the rich tradition of Indigenous star knowledge — exploring how Native peoples read the night sky not simply as a navigation tool, but as a living system of memory, seasonal knowledge, and cultural narrative. Students will compare Western astronomical frameworks with Indigenous ways of knowing, discovering that both represent sophisticated, observation-based methods of making sense of the universe.
From identifying constellations and major stars visible in the August sky to understanding the Earth–Sun relationship that produces meteor showers, students will engage in authentic scientific observation while developing cross-cultural literacy and an appreciation for the diverse ways humans have studied and interpreted the natural world.
"The same stars overhead tonight have guided, inspired, and connected generations of people long before written history. Your students will leave with a deeper understanding of Earth's place in the solar system — and with the knowledge that science and story have always traveled together."
A pre-visit classroom guide and post-visit reflection activity are provided to help teachers connect the evening experience to in-class astronomy and cultural studies units. Students are encouraged to bring a journal for observational sketching and written reflection.
