Six Penny Creek and The Underground Railroad

843 Park Road, Elverson, PA 19520-9523

Free Event

The small, rural Black community, now known as Six Penny Creek, located near Hopewell Furnace, Berks County, Pennsylvania was an important location on the Underground Railroad. The community used the surrounding land, owned by Hopewell Furnace for the production of charcoal to fuel the iron furnace, to aid and abet the movement and hiding of people escaping slavery in the south and to ensure the survival of their community. Come hear and see how recent archaeological research adds to our understanding of the role of the Underground Railroad and the charcoal lands at Six Penny Creek. There will be a hike the next day to see the location!
