Self-guided walkabout: The Role of Death in the Forest
2951 Prospect Rd., Slippery Rock, PA 16057-5023
Forests hold secrets in their shadows. Fallen trees, rotting logs, and the slow work of fungi may look eerie or haunting, but they are signs of hope. On this self-guided journey, you’ll come to understand how disturbance, disease, and death are woven into the fabric of the forest. Discover how life and death are intertwined, each sustaining the other in a cycle as old as the forest itself.
From Saturday, October 25 through Sunday, November 9 visitors can pick up a free guide and follow a designated route to discover what role death plays in a forest community.
No registration is required, but visitors wishing to receive the guide electronically may contact jenningssp@pa.gov or call 724-794-6011. The printed guide and experience are available sunrise to sunset October 25 – November 9 beginning at the Center entrance. The route contains some slopes and uneven terrain but is generally easy.
