Pennsylvania Pawpaws

1579 State Park Road, Newport, PA 17074-9428

Free Event

Deep in the forests of Pennsylvania exists an ancient tree that produces a surprisingly delicious fruit! The pawpaw tree (Asimina triloba) can be found throughout the forests of PA, but is certainly not a common or well known tree. Join pawpaw aficionado Ranger Thrush as he teaches us all about the "Allegheny Banana"!

In this presentation we will cover everything from the history of the pawpaw, uses, identification, facts about the fruit, and more! We'll even give you some fun recipes to try to use with them! Lastly, we will lead a walk to a small pawpaw patch within the park to help you learn to identify this fascinating tree. The walk is very short and of course optional.

If you require special accommodations for the program, please reach out at least 72 hours in advance to notify the park office. All programs are subject to cancellation due to weather or staffing shortages. Check the Facebook page or DCNR Calendar for the latest updates prior to coming to a program.
