Monarch Biology and Tagging

It is time once again to observe the annual migration of our famous butterfly, the Monarch! If you are interested in learning about this amazing insect, please join Park Naturalists on Saturday, September 4, 2021, from 9 am to Noon. You will learn about Monarch biology, their life cycle, and participate in actual tagging efforts. We will meet at 9am at the AAUW Pavilion at TREC. After the initial class on biology and how to tag, we will all drive our own vehicles down to Presque Isle to visit a few prime feeding sites in order to collect and tag the butterflies. All tagging equipment is provided.  For COVID safety reasons, as well as logistical considerations, this event is limited to 20 participants. Registration is required. Please register no later than Wednesday, September 1, 2021.

All Current DCNR COVID safety measures will be followed by park staff. If you are not vaccinated, you are expected to wear a mask and maintain social distancing. If you are vaccinated, then it is your choice to wear a mask, although social distancing will still be expected. Park staff will sanitize and clean all equipment before and after the event. The equipment that you are given to use should not be shared among those who are not in your family group.

We will NOT tag if the weather is not conducive to butterfly flight, which means no rain, and no unusually cool temperatures or fog. Be prepared to bring sunscreen, insect repellant and water. If we do NOT tag, we will still hold an informative class on their biology and life cycle.
