One of the most common animals to greet the European settlers and explorers in colonial America was the beaver. Through the 18th and 19th century, they were relentlessly trapped for their fur, until they were nearly driven to extinction. Eventually coming under early hunting regulations, they started a recovery, aided by relocation programs. Today, beavers are becoming a common animal in many of our waterways. Their dam building is beneficial to the environment, creating wetlands and habitats that support a variety of animals and plants.
