Introduction to Land Navigation Part 2

Now that you’ve mastered the theory, it’s time to head into the field. Part Two is where we put your classroom knowledge to the test in a real-world environment.

Field Practice Objectives

In this hands-on session, you will move beyond the desk and onto the terrain to refine your skills:

  • Practical Application: Use your pace counting to measure distance across varying terrain.
  • Sighting and Steering: Practice shooting accurate azimuths to distant landmarks.
  • Route Finding: Navigate between established points using only your compass and your senses.
  • Terrain Association: Learn to correlate the features you see on the ground with your calculations.

Gear Checklist

Since this session takes place outdoors, please come prepared for the elements:

  • Your Compass: Again, a lensatic compass is strongly recommended for ease of use.
  • Appropriate Footwear: Boots or sturdy shoes for off-trail hiking.
  • Weather Gear: Dress in layers and bring water.
