Hightowering Hemlocks

McConnells Mill State Park - Kildoo Parking Area: 40.951710, -80.168474

Friday, June 14, 2024 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM The Eastern hemlock, our state tree, defines many of the beautiful valleys we love in Pennsylvania. Have you ever smelled the hemlocks’ needle and imagined taking a step back in time when Penn’s Woods nearly covered the whole state was covered in trees? The Eastern hemlock is known for being an important construction timber and used in the tanning industry. However, it is also important to our wildlife for food and habitat, especially our state fish, the brook trout. This once long-lived tree, an important symbol of our Commonwealth, is facing several threats. Learn about this lovely tree while enjoying the Breakneck Falls Trail. The parking lot where we meet is before Breakneck and Eckert bridges, beyond the privately-owned Breakneck Campground. Dress for the weather (severe weather cancels event) and wear sturdy shoes, the trail is approx. 1 & 1/2 miles long with uneven steps and rocky terrain. Bring your own drink and snack.
