The Eastern Hemlock, our state tree. Have you ever smelled the hemlocks’ needle and imagined taking a step back in time when Penn’s Woods nearly covered the whole state was covered in trees, back before the logging industry was at its peak? The Eastern hemlock is known for being an important construction timber and used in the tanning industry. However, it is also important to our wildlife for food and habitat, especially our state fish, the brook trout. What will we do without it? This once long-lived tree, an important symbol of our Commonwealth, but it is now under attack. What shall we do? Come find out on a two-mile hike with the Park Naturalist along the Slippery Rock Creek on Breakneck Falls Trail. Wear sturdy hiking shoes, dress for the weather, and bring drinking water and a snack.
