The Great Backyard Bird Count is a citizen science project created by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society in order to obtain data on wild birds in February. This year's bird count is from Feb. 14th-17th. Binoculars are encouraged and cameras are welcome! Please leave pets at home as they may scare away some birds. Service animals as always are welcome.
For Feb. 14th, we will meet at the park office at 9am to begin. We will walk on our exercise trail for 1 hour to count the birds & species that we see. We will walk the back section of the exercise trail first, and then cross the road to continue behind the Blue Ball Tavern.
For Feb. 15th, we will walk the East Area of the park and Mill Race Trail. We will meet by the stage and pavilion 3 at 9am.
Some binoculars are available to borrow, but they are not of high quality. Birding experience is not necessary! The park naturalist will be uploading the list from this walk onto eBird so the data can be used to monitor bird populations. If you would like to help, go to https://gbbc.birdcount.org/about/ to learn more about the bird count, the eBird database, and why citizen science projects such as these are so important in monitoring birds. Making an account is free, and observations can be as little as 15 min. This is a great family activity in the winter, and observations can be made year round! If you have any questions, or if you need an accommodation to participate in park activities due to a disability, please contact the park office at 717-567-9255. With a minimum of one-week notice, interpreters for people who are deaf or hard of hearing are available for educational programs.
