Foltz School Volunteer Docent Information Session
2951 Prospect Rd., Slippery Rock, PA 16057-5023
Jennings Environmental Education Center and the park friends’ group, 3MJC, are seeking volunteer docents to help introduce visitors to the newly-restored Foltz School one room schoolhouse from June through October. An information session on this opportunity will be held May 7 at 10 am at the Foltz School, but attendance is not required in order to apply to volunteer.
Volunteer docents will have the opportunity to become part of a dedicated team of volunteers, and share their knowledge and experiences with visitors, and be a part of preserving local history. No prior teaching experience is required, but volunteers should have good communication skills, a friendly demeanor, and a willingness to learn. Docents will receive training on the history of the schoolhouse and on how to orient visitors to the school and available activities and displays. Applicants should be interested in local history and education and be willing to commit to at least two open-house type shifts during the summer and fall. Shifts are typically five hours long, will be staffed by at least two docents, and are scheduled on weekdays and weekends. Most shifts are Sundays from 10-3, but other opportunities are available.
Interested individuals can apply online at https://bit.ly/FoltzDocent or may contact the park at 724-794-6011 or jenningssp@pa.gov to apply or learn more.
There will also be an info session about becoming a docent on Sunday, May 7 from 10 am – 11 am at the Foltz School. Staff and volunteers will review the history of the schoolhouse, basic duties of docents and preview the types of activities and interactions to expect during a docent shift. Please note, this is not a training, but an informative session. Those wishing to attend the info session should also fill out the application or contact the park, as above. Attending the info session is not required in order to apply.
