First Day Hikes
15795 Greenwood Road, Huntingdon, PA 16652-5831
Come and greet the new one with one of our First Day hikes. There are two hikes to choose from, ranging from easy to challenging. There’s a hike for everyone, from the casual walker to serious hiker. Make sure children are properly dressed for the weather conditions, and be sure children can finish the hike, especially the vista hike! Pets on a leash are welcome. Bring water, snacks, and a camera for the many photo opportunities on the trails.
FIRST DAY HIKE #1 - 12:00 pm – Challenging Hike - This 5 mile loop with about 800 feet of elevation gain leaves Greenwood Furnace along the Monsell Trail, meanders through a mature oak forest along Lorence trail, then summits the Stone Mountain Ridge on Turkey Trail - showcasing the fine stone work of the Standing Stone Trail Club. Once on the ridge top we will walk along the Standing Stone Trail to the Stone Valley Vista, looking back on Greenwood Furnace and taking snack/picture break, then proceed north on the SST back to the trailhead at the park. Depending on snow conditions this hike should take 3-4 hours. Led by Park Mamnger Mike Dinsmore.
FIRST DAY HIKE #2 - 2:00 pm – Easy Hike - Start the new year with a relaxing and leisurely stroll around the lake! Enjoy viewing the calm water of Greenwood Lake as we hike together around this six-acre body of water for a distance of approximately one mile on the first day of 2022. As we travel along the trail, we can take advantage of the opportunities to view the light and shadows on the surface of the water with the possibility of capturing interesting photos. Meet at the Greenwood Furnace Park Office at 10am. Bring your favorite camera or device if you'd like to try use it to get that elusive unique photograph.
