Winged  Migration

The historic Newtown Theatre will screen Winged Migration on Tuesday, April 2 at 7:30 PM.

This documentary screening is co-hosted by the Lower Makefield Township and Newtown Township Bird Towns and Matt Truesdale, an environmental education specialist at Washington Crossing Historic Park. Truesdale will introduce the film, answer questions at the end, and provide attendees with the opportunity to sign up for one of his guided bird walks at the park.

“Winged Migration” presents an epic portrait of winter bird migration. Filmed on all seven continents over four years, the footage is brought together into one portrait of a journey that’s uniformly arduous for all kinds of different birds.

Rather than concentrating on statistics and facts, the film near-wordlessly portrays the sheer physical effort demanded of the birds on their disparate routes. Along the way, we see the many dangers they face, from man-made waste to a group of hungry crabs.

Most of the footage was shot using in-flight cameras, allowing the viewer to “fly” alongside the birds of successive species, especially Canada geese. They traverse every kind of weather and landscape, covering vast distances in a flight for survival.

Bird Town is a grassroots conservation program that works directly with local leaders to develop bird-friendly communities. The organization’s mission is to work in partnership with municipalities, their residents, businesses, and other like-minded organizations to promote community-based conservation actions to create a healthier and more sustainable environment for birds, wildlife and people.
