Fall Field Day for Adults

1579 State Park Road, Newport, PA 17074-9428

Free Event

Join us for a brand new hunting and fishing experience at Little Buffalo! It is National Hunting and Fishing weekend, and what better way to celebrate than to try out a new skill?

This event is for adults and teens! It will be structured into 4 sessions, and you will choose one class for each session.

Please note - you do not need to bring anything to this event. We will supply all of the equipment needed.

Class descriptions are below!

Turkey Hunting – Turkey hunting is not often a sport that’s picked up by someone new just to try it. Generally, turkey hunters are taught the basics through years of guided mentorship. We’d like to change that! In this program we’ll give you a basic coverage of turkey hunting in PA. We will discuss the habitat preferences of wild turkey, including a discussion on why the park is not prime turkey habitat. We will also cover how and where to scout, types of calls, and we’ll even do a hunting simulation. There will not be a hunt, so please do not bring your own firearm.

Trapping & Furbearers – In this program we will cover basic knowledge of rules and regulations of trapping, fur identification, setting some traps, and showing and explaining legal traps. We will discuss how to find places to hunt and trap fur bearing mammals, as well as additional opportunities to learn more with the PA Trappers Association.

Archery - Join us, as we develop the basics of archery as a sport! Lean how to safely shoot a bow from a NASP certified archery instructor, and maybe pick up a new hobby. You don’t need to hunt to enjoy archery as a sport, and we will give you tips and places to continue your education in our area. Please do not bring your own bow, we will provide all equipment.

Bass Fishing - Bass are often considered the number one game fish in North America, as well as in PA. Of course trout get the most attention in April, but bass fishing can be great throughout much of the year. Some areas though, such as here at Holman Lake, fish can become accustomed to anglers trying to reel them in, so it can be harder to pull in those trophy fish. Mimics Bait Company will be here to show you some samples of lures and lure types to trick even the smartest bass, and provide some tips and tricks to get you more fish. *If you want to actively fish, a regular fishing license is required*.

Basic Survival Skills – Does the idea of going out alone in the woods intimidate you? We understand, but after this program, you should feel far more comfortable exploring the outdoors on your own. We will teach S.T.O.P  – which stands for Stop, Think, Observe/Organize, Plan. We will discuss basic items to always keep with you in case of an emergency, and how to build a fire if needed with materials around you. Even if you are a long-time outdoors person, it doesn’t hurt to brush up on these skills.

Wild Game Cooking – Alright, so I’ve caught my own food, now what do I do with it? Here we will try some recipes and tips to make your own amazing meals from the harvest you’ve collected. Please make us aware of any allergies you may have, because sampling will be involved!
