Elk in Pennsylvania
15795 Greenwood Road, Huntingdon, PA 16652-5831
Come and join local PA Game Warden Amy Nabozny for her annual wildlife program, this year featuring the elk. Learn about these intelligent and adaptable creatures.
Eastern elk once were common throughout Pennsylvania. Native peoples called them wapiti. But as Europeans settled across the state, they were hunted to near extinction in the state. What few remained were confined mostly to the northern tier. Later reintroductions helped to boost populations, and today, viewing elk is a favorite wildlife watching activity. In the program, Amy will talk about the history, current range, population trends, and threats such as Chronic wasting disease.
