Chronic Wasting Disease
15795 Greenwood Road, Huntingdon, PA 16652-5831
Come and join local PA Game Warden Amy Nabozny for a program on Chronic Wasting Disease, also known as CWD.
Chronic Wasting Disease is becoming a concern for hunters and non-hunters alike. It is a contagious disease that infects the brains of Pennsylvania’s deer and elk, and it is always fatal. It has been detected in four Disease Management Areas, including the DMA in our region. While there is currently no evidence of it infecting humans, studies show CWD can infect other non-human primates, raising concerns that it might transfer to humans. Scientists recommend not to eat the meat of animals infected with the disease. The PA Game Commission and other agencies are also working to manage the disease in deer and elk populations in the state.
