Due to the expected high heat and humidity this weekend, the charcoal burn has been cancelled. Stay Cool!
Blacksmith Shop Open - Saturday and Sunday - 1 and 4 pm - Open Discussions
Sat 2 pm – Dirtiest Job at the Furnace
Sun 2 pm – Making Iron in the Days of the Charcoal Iron Furnace
On Saturday, July 20 and Sunday, July 21, at the Blacksmith shop, Greenwood Furnace State Park and many volunteers will recreate the “lost art” of turning wood into charcoal, just as the furnace colliers did over a century ago. The continuous demonstration will begin Saturday morning at 9:30 am with preparation of the hearth, stacking of the wood, and covering the pit with leaves and dirt. The lighting off of the pit will take place about 11:00 am. The pit will burn continuously into Sunday afternoon, and will end with raking the coal out on Sunday afternoon beginning at 1:00 pm. Throughout the burn, “colliers” will be available to talk about the process while tending the pit.
TEACHERS - This program doubles as an Act 48 Credit teacher workshop. See separate event listing for details on the workshop and how to sign up.
