Caledonia Ironworks was burned by the Army of Northern Virginia as it marched eastward to a small unknown village called Gettysburg. Owned by Congressman Thaddeus Stevens, Caledonia employed African-Americans, which made this community a convenient hiding place for freedom seekers on the Underground Railroad.
