Bug Out! Night Life in Parks
843 Park Road, Elverson, PA 19520-9523
This program is a part of the Parks After Dark program series.
Join us on Saturday July 13 for "Bug Out! Night Life in the Parks". Multiple program offerings will be occurring throughout this evening both at Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site and French Creek State Park. Reservations are required to attend these programs. A registration link will be made available on this posting four weeks before the scheduled program.
Meet at the Hopewell Furnace visitor center parking lot at 8 PM for a program about fireflies. This program will take place in the upper parking lot near the orchard. Learn about the lifeways of fireflies and take part in a fun citizen science project where you will have the opportunity to catch fireflies and record the number of species present in the park. This program will end at 9:30 PM.
At 9:30 PM a night hike will be departing from the Hopewell Furnace Visitor Center parking lot. We will be taking a short (about one mile) walk through the historic site and parts of French Creek. Along the way we will be listening for night creatures and hopefully see some too! After the night hike, you will have the opportunity to attend one additional program at French Creek State Park.
Starting at 9:30 PM a program about moths will be taking place at the French Creek State Park amphitheater. Join Dr. Steve Mason from Immaculata University as he tells you all about moths and the many bugs that come out at night. There will be light stations set up at the amphitheater to attract nocturnal bugs. Stay later in the night for a potential chance to see giant moths like the Cecropia or Luna Moth!
For those interested in attending, don’t forget your flashlights (preferably lights with a red light setting), sturdy shoes, water, and anything else you might need for your own safety!
