Birding in Indiana County in 1776

Join guest speaker, Ed Donely, as we travel back in time to see how Birding was done in 1776!

  • Birding here in 1776 would have been very different than birding now. We will travel back in time in our imaginations to plan a hypothetical 1776 birding excursion in what is now Indiana County. Ed will describe the various habitats in the region at the time and where we can find them. He will list some of the species we hope to see, including species that are no longer here. We will also discuss species that are common here now but were rare or absent in the county in 1776. And we will have to deal with the confusing bird names of that time. We will look at a map of trails and villages in what is now Indiana County and plot out our route by horseback and canoe. We will plan our overnight stays at known accommodations, when possible, but sometimes we will have to make our own shelters.

This program is a part of DCNR's America 250th programming and Indiana County 1776 Speaker Series. Park at Dragonfly Pond and head on up to the Environmental Learning Center. All are welcome!
