How can some creatures go from salt water to freshwater or vice versa? Isn’t that cheating? We call these rule-breakers catadromous when they migrate from saltwater to freshwater and anadromous when they move from freshwater to saltwater. Join a state park naturalist for a paddle on the Giving Pond while we talk about different species in PA that manage to pull this off, with a focus on the mysterious American eel.

For this program, we will go over some of the basics for paddling. We will go over safety and paddle strokes on land. Once we get on the water, we will explore Giving Pond while watching for wildlife and learning about local aquatic critters.

Use of single or tandem kayaks, paddles, and life jackets provided. ***Due to limited tandems, please notify ahead of time if you would prefer a tandem. Space is limited; registration required. ***

This program may be modified or cancelled in the case of inclement weather.

After meeting at the park office, we will walk south along the towpath to the only covered bridge that remains along the canal in the charming hamlet of Uhlerstown. We will walk across the bridge to see some of the well-kept, historic buildings then turn around and head back to the office.

Every ghost story you’ve ever heard offers a glimpse of the time of its origin. Join a state park naturalist for an evening hike on the Delaware Canal towpath, while we talk about local history and hauntings, and tap into why ghosts fascinate us so much in the first place.

For this walk, we will cover roughly 3 miles round trip on flat ground. Please bring water, any snacks you may want, and comfortable shoes for walking. We will also be out slightly past sunset for this hike, so you may want to bring a flashlight in case of cloud cover. For any questions about this program, please contact Annastasia Soto at annsoto@pa.gov.
