Greenwood Furnace Folk Gathering

Musicians to Gather at Greenwood Furnace State Park

Want to improve your music skills or learn to play an instrument? Musicians from Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, New York and beyond will gather at Greenwood Furnace State Park in September for a fun and friendly weekend of playing, learning and listening to a wide variety of folk music -- a fantastic three days of workshops, concerts, jams, dancing and friendship. Activities are held at Greenwood Furnace State Park in Huntingdon County in central PA, about 20 miles from State College and 90 miles from Harrisburg. The park is a gorgeous and historic location with beautiful mountain views, many miles of hiking trails, and a six-acre lake for swimming and fishing.

The Greenwood Furnace Folk Gathering will be held Friday to Sunday, September 15, 16 & 17. This annual event is a learning event offering 47 workshops on topics such as West African Drumming, Harmony Singing, How to Jam, Arranging Traditional Tunes, Pennsylvania Tunes, and Conquering Stage Fright. Musicians of all instruments and levels are invited to learn in this friendly, intimate atmosphere. There are also options for singers, dancers, and non-musicians. Jam sessions will take place throughout the weekend.

For those who are new to music, there will be “try a” workshops on ukulele, fiddle, banjo, and bagpipes with gentle and patient teachers to get you started. There will be a staff concert each evening, followed by staff-led jams, and a contradance with open band on Saturday night.

Each year the event honors a Pennsylvania Heritage Musician. This year’s awardee is Ed Hansen, a fiddler from northwest PA, who will be recognized in a special Saturday afternoon program.

The evening concerts, Heritage Musician presentation, hymn sing and contradance are free and open to the public. All other workshops require registration and a fee.

The Greenwood Furnace Folk Gathering is a joint project of the Huntingdon County Arts Council and the musical group Simple Gifts from the State College area.
