This event is mainly intended for Junior Girl Scouts working on their Geocacher badge, but is also open to Cadette and Senior scouts who are working on interest projects related to overland navigation skills.
For the Geocacher badge, we will introduce the scouts to geocaching.com, and cover all of the suggestions listed in the sidebar for Step 1.
The hands-on portion includes how GPS works, controls, basic functions, navigating the screens, finding coordinates, entering waypoints, editing waypoints, and finding a geocache. There will be several temporary caches set up for practicing all the above skills.
There will be a craft session when the scouts can make a trade item. This would be used when the troop completes Step 4, finding an established geocache.
There is no fee for this event, but pre-registration is required. You may register as an individual or as a troop. Registration is limited to 15 people, and if a minimum of eight do not register, the event will be cancelled. The deadline to register is 4:00 pm on May 1, 2017.
Participants should bring a bag lunch and snacks, and dress for the weather. Insect repellent is also recommended.
To register, or for more information, call John Kaercher at 570-753-6005/6000 or e-mail RA-NRSPLPIN-EE@pa.gov
