Cook Forest Living History Weekend

Please join us as we celebrate the Pennsylvania Bureau of State Park’s 125th Anniversary with a fun filled weekend of living history as we journey through various historical eras of the United States: French & Indian War, Lumber Era, Civil War, WWI, and the War on Terror. Join living historian and master story-teller, Paul Stillman from Historically Speaking!, and historical interpreters, Dave Clark, Dennis Knowles, and Van Wagner as they take us through these noteworthy periods in history through first person character portrayals, and hands-on demonstrations.

Friday, May 25 from 800pm-1000pm ‘Cathedral by Candlelight’ Walk back in time with historical characters from the past. Come view the ancient forest as we hike beneath the giants by candlelight. Please meet at the Log Cabin Inn Environmental Learning Classroom where a 1750’s French Marine will guide us into the depths of the Forest Cathedral to meet an awaiting Seneca Warrior on his trek south along the Olean Trail.

Saturday, May 26 from 1000am-1200pm Paul Stillman as a ‘Seneca Indian’ A Native American visits us from the past on his trip from New York as he travels south along the historic Olean Trail. Please bring your camp chairs and meet at the Log Cabin Inn Environmental Learning Classroom where he will be preparing sinew for his trip.

Saturday, May 26 from 100pm-230pm Logging, Dogging, & Hewing: An 1800’s Timber Operation’ Celebrate Cook Forest’s lumber heritage with Dale Luthringer by observing various tools of the trade, “in-period” costume, and ‘hewing to the line’. Bring a partner and test your skill at the two-man crosscut saw. Please bring your camp chairs and meet at the Log Cabin Inn Environmental Learning Classroom.

Saturday, May 26 from 300pm-430pm Paul Stillman, Dave Clark, and Dennis Knowles as ‘The North Meets South’ Come see the Civil War through a New York regimental line soldier and rebels of the Army of Northern Virginia. Please bring your camp chairs and meet at the Log Cabin Inn Environmental Learning Classroom.

Saturday, May 26 from 800pm-900pm Paul Stillman as ‘Benjamin Franklin’ One of the founding fathers of our country. Join the elderly statesman as he reminisces about his involvement in the French & Indian forts of the 1750’s. Please bring your chairs & blankets and meet at the Ridge Camp Park Amphitheater.

Sunday, May 27 from 100-200pm Dave Clark as a ‘World War I Doughboy of the 27th Division’ See and hear what life was like in the trenches ‘OVER THERE!’. Please meet at the Log Cabin Inn Environmental Learning Classroom.

Sunday, May 27 from 230pm-400pm Paul Stillman as a ‘Colonial Craftsman’ Learn how things were made during the early part of the 18th century during a quill and bamboo pen fabrication workshop. Please bring your camp chairs at meet at the Log Cabin Inn Environmental Learning Classroom.

Sunday, May 27 from 430-530pm Dennis Knowles as a ‘Line Officer in Afghanistan’ Learn about those who continue to give their all to defend our nation from terrorists at home and abroad. Please bring your camp chairs and meet at the Log Cabin Inn Environmental Learning Classroom.

Sunday, May 27 from 800-900pm Join Van Wagner for a special, one-hour performance of storytelling and music that commemorates the 125th anniversary of state parks. Trace our heritage of restoration, recreation, conservation, and family fun as we reflect on how Pennsylvania’s citizens were instrumental in the establishment of state parks. Please bring your chairs and blankets and meet at the Ridge Camp Park Amphitheater. www.vanwagnermusic.com
